UC Press and the founders of the journal have a critical role to play in ensuring that all work we publish is not only of a high standard, but that it is above reproach in terms of integrity. We therefore hold ourselves, our editors, and our authors to very high standards. This ranges from anti-plagiarism checking and thorough peer review, to ensuring that all appropriate materials and data that underpin the scholarship are also maximally available. We believe that open access is the best possible way to ensure that work is fully open to professional and public scrutiny. We will cooperate fully with any investigation into any unethical practices by our editors, reviewers, authors, or staff.
A combination of pre-screening and open access is the best possible defense against plagiarism. All articles submitted to Media+Environment are automatically screened for plagiarism by the CrossCheck system from CrossRef. This system compares incoming articles to a large database of academic content, and alerts editors to any possible issues.
The Media+Environment Editors ensure that all research output is thoroughly peer reviewed by external reviewers. Certain submitted items may not be sent for external peer review but will include extensive editorial review and revisions. Media+Environment adheres to the Committee on Publishing Ethics (COPE) guidelines for best practice.
All Media+Environment articles are published under open licenses from Creative Commons. We believe that only CC BY meets the requirements for true open access for journals.
Media+Environment is a signatory of the Budapest Open Access Initiative, which states that open access “…will accelerate research, enrich education, share the learning of the rich with the poor and the poor with the rich, make this literature as useful as it can be, and lay the foundation for uniting humanity in a common intellectual conversation and quest for knowledge.”
